Development of a colour concept

For the renovation of a care home belonging to the Dessaules Foundation, SCDH is developing an evidence-based colour concept that equally enhances orientation, well-being and identity. The aim is to create a calming design for the communal areas and alcoves leading to the residents' rooms, to repair wear and tear, and to create an atmospheric, nature-inspired environment for residents and care staff.

Term

  • October 2025-December 2025

Context

The nursing home at Schwanengasse 23 in Biel shows age-related wear and tear on walls, baseboards and ceilings. At the same time, the overall appearance is inconsistent. Strong yellow and orange tones in the alcoves leading to the residents' rooms are very similar in colour and do not help with orientation. Signs of wear and tear in communal areas further reinforce the visual impression of unrest. The aim of the renovation is therefore to refresh the walls and doors, combining design quality, functional requirements and age-appropriate design.

Approach

The colour concept is based on findings from research into biophilic design and integrates natural analogies as a design leitmotif. In terms of content, the concept is based on the natural colours of the Jura region – limestone mountains, vineyards, lakes and gorges serve as a source of inspiration for a differentiated, calm colour scheme with regional roots, which is used primarily in the niches. Wall surfaces and door frames are colour-contrasted. Key parameters of age-appropriate design taken into account:

  • Orientation and support for people with dementia
  • Conscious use of contrasts
  • Durability and maintenance of surfaces
  • Promotion of emotional well-being

In addition to developing colour schemes for walls, skirting boards, door frames, alcoves and communal areas, the project includes location planning in the floor plan, material collages, visualisations and support with sampling and implementation on site.

Benefits

  • The targeted reduction of overall colour and the development of a harmonious, nature-inspired mood create a calmer atmosphere that also fosters a sense of identity.
  • Differentiated colour zones improve orientation.
  • The repair of wear and tear on heavily used surfaces contributes to the long-term value retention of the rooms.
