Development of a colour and material concept

For the Stiftung Dessaules's new care home, SCDH is developing an evidence-based colour and material concept that takes into account orientation, everyday care and living atmosphere in equal measure. The aim is to create a health-promoting, homely and functionally well-designed environment for 13 residents in the new building.

Context

Since 1985, the Stiftung Dessaules has been offering nursing homes with a family atmosphere at three locations in Biel. As part of the construction of a new apartment on Schwanengasse, SCDH has been commissioned to develop a colour and material concept. The request comes at a late stage in the construction process. The architectural planning by the Kistler Vogt Partner office is already largely complete, which means that the lighting, common areas and central material decisions have already been specified. The scope for design is therefore limited.

A key challenge is to break up the planned raw concrete look in favour of a more homely, health-promoting atmosphere. The long central corridor with identical niches leading to the residents' rooms poses a particular spatial difficulty. The uniformity makes orientation and identification difficult – both of which are key factors in a care context.

The aim is therefore to develop a consistent colour and material concept within the existing architectural framework that improves orientation, supports everyday care and creates a familiar living atmosphere.

Approach

The SCDH is developing the colour and material concept in a participatory and evidence-based process. This is based on an analysis of current studies and proven approaches from research into health-promoting interiors.

Caregivers and other user groups are actively involved in the concept development through workshops. On this basis, differentiated colour and material proposals are created that are based on established colour systems and take all usage zones into account.

The effect of the proposed concepts is visualised and reviewed using mood boards, 2D and 3D sketches, and physical material samples. Through simulations and spatial tests, the choice of colours and materials is evaluated and further developed together with the users in the room.

Benefits

  • The developed concept creates a clear structure, supports orientation and safety, and at the same time promotes a homely, familiar atmosphere.
  • The participatory involvement of the nursing staff results in an accepted design concept that takes real work processes into account.
  • The evidence-based derivation of the colour concept enhances the long-term quality of the spatial environment and makes a lasting contribution to the quality of life of the residents and to good working conditions in everyday care.
